Celebrating the Heritage of English’s of Brighton – A Family Legacy

A Family Business with Deep Roots

While English’s dates back to the 1800s, the Leigh-Jones family became the custodians of this Brighton institution in the 1940s. For over 75 years, their dedication has helped preserve the restaurant’s traditions while embracing innovation. Simon Leigh-Jones, the current owner, continues to honour this legacy, ensuring English’s remains a cornerstone of Brighton’s dining scene.

A Fascinating Piece of History Resurfaces

Recently, Simon received a wonderful selection of old newspaper clippings from The Argus, dated 1st February 1966, along with a rare photo of the restaurant’s exterior likely pre-dating World War II. These were sent to him by Mr Antony Dixon, whose late wife was part of the English family—her grandfather was Mr English himself!

One of the articles from The Argus reflected on English’s deep connection to Brighton’s fishing heritage, highlighting its long-standing reputation for serving the finest oysters:

“English’s Oyster Bar is one of the oldest established businesses in the historic part of Brighton, for East Street – and it is particularly that part of it where English’s is situated – is part of the original fishing village of Brighthelmstone, and it is easy to visualise the generations of fish-lovers who have been regaled by countless thousands of oysters for which English’s have been internationally famous for over 150 years.”

Another feature in The Argus on the same day included a photo of Mr Clifford Leigh-Jones (Simon’s father), and praised the speed and efficiency of oyster deliveries from Whitstable, ensuring that English’s diners always enjoyed the freshest seafood. The article also beautifully captured the restaurant’s enduring atmosphere, stating:

“Old-world quiet and courtesy and a leisurely elegance of atmosphere are well appreciated by English’s clientele.”

These words still ring true today—English’s remains a place of timeless charm, impeccable service, and an authentic seafood experience.
