World Tuna Day 2026 – A Good Excuse to Eat Great Tuna

Every year on 2nd May, World Tuna Day rolls around – and honestly, we don’t need much of an excuse to talk about tuna. But we’ll take it.

Tuna’s one of those fish that doesn’t need a hard sell. It’s rich, meaty, versatile, and when it’s sourced well and cooked properly, there’s not much that can touch it. We’ve been serving it at English’s for years, and it’s always been one of those dishes that quietly gets on with being brilliant.

Why It Matters

Tuna are remarkable fish – fast, far-ranging, and central to healthy ocean ecosystems. They’re also one of the most consumed fish on the planet, which means where they come from matters. Overfishing has put pressure on several species over the years, and responsible sourcing isn’t optional anymore.

At English’s, provenance has always been part of how we work. We care about where our fish comes from – because great food starts long before it reaches the kitchen.

What’s on the Menu

Tuna Steak from the Grill – £28

Our 200g tuna steak is one of those dishes that reminds you why keeping things simple works. Cooked on the grill, served with your choice of chimichurri, peppercorn sauce, or béarnaise. Gluten free, too.

It’s meaty and rich without being heavy – sits right up there with lobster and seabass as a proper treat. The chimichurri brings brightness and a bit of heat, the béarnaise is the more classic route, and the peppercorn does exactly what you’d want it to – bold, warming, satisfying.

Tuna Sashimi on the Cold Platter – £52pp (gf)

If you want tuna at its most pure, this is the one. Our cold platter features tuna sashimi alongside dressed brown crab, tiger prawns, clams, welks, mussels, and raw rock oysters. It comes with wakame, aioli, mignonette, ponzu, wasabi, and lemon mayonnaise – plenty of ways to eat it however you like.

Clean, precise, and a reminder that great tuna handled properly needs very little else. At £52 per person, it’s a lovely way to spend a long lunch or a slow evening in the Lanes. A crisp white on the side and you’re sorted.

Come and Have Some

We’re right in the middle of the Lanes, a short walk from the sea, and we’ve been here since 1945. Whether you’re a regular or it’s your first time, World Tuna Day feels like a good reason to come in and sit down.
